Shane looks emotionally distraught, finally hearing the truth. Lori apologizes to Shane for creating such a big mess.
Carl asks Shane if he can share a secret. Shane turns away Carl, but reconsiders since he thinks of Rick's son as his own. Carl shares that it is his fault that Dale died. Shane rejects the notion, but Carl refers to the swamp incident in which he threw rocks at a walker and got scared after it got loose. He turned over Daryl's gun to Shane, clear upset that his actions resulted in Dale's death.
Shane confronts Rick about having a talk with Carl. He breaks the promise to reveal that Carl got stuck in the swamp messing with a walker, the very same walker that killed Dale. Rick tells Shane that Lori will have a talk with Carl. Shane informs Rick that he needs to deal with the Carl issue now.
Rick gets frustrated with Shane because he refuses to be told what to do. Thus, Rick wants to deal with the Randall issue rather than help Carl deal with the guild he son holds in Dale's death. Shane gives Rick the gun that Carl took from Daryl.
Rick has a talk with Carl about his actions. This is the first time we see Rick asserting himself to boost Carl's spirits, shedding light on the cold truth of the future. Rick admits that his mother and he will die sooner or later. The new world is not as easy place to survive. Carl listens to his father. Rick returns the gun back to Carl, showing his son that he will give him more freedom to make decisions.
Rick tells Andrea to keep an eye on Shane. He believes Shane is not a bad guy, though his decision making is clearly questionable. Andrea responds to Rick, that maybe he should stay on the farm to keep order in the group. Rick suggests that anytime he leaves the farm, all Hell breaks loose.
Shane is obviously designing a plot. He pulls up a chair next to Randall. Randall's face is covered like a hostage ready to visit a private location. His wrists are bloodied up from attempting to wiggle out of the handcuffs. Shane loses his mind. We see him smacking his head, going in and out of reality.
In the woods, Shane tells Randall that he must remain quiet. He wants Randall to lead him to the group. Randall is friendly, telling Shane he will like the group. Randall thinks everything will work out well for him. He appears excited to leave the farm. Around the opposite side of a tree, Shane snaps Randall's neck. Shane concocts a plan with smashing his face into a tree. Blood spews out of his mouth.
Back at the farm, T-Dog discovers that Randall escaped the barn. He informs Rick and the group. Shane watches on from the distance, hiding his gun in the dirt. As Shane approaches, the group believes his story that Randall hit his face and took his gun.
Rick splits up two groups to head into the woods to retrieve Randall. It is an intense moment to apprehend Randall before he reaches his group. Rick and Shane go off into one direction. Daryl and Glenn head off in the opposite direction.
It is getting late. The sun has already set. Shane deceives Rick about Randall. Rick obviously knows where the search is leading. Shane's story doesn't add up Rick continues to listen. He follows Shane through the woods, which is a wild goose chase to engineer a plan to isolate Rick.
Daryl and Glenn are mystified to find Randall the zombie. Randall throws Glenn, and then forces Daryl on the group. Glenn finally redeems himself with axing Randall the zombie dead. Daryl is stumped because Randall has no bites and a broken neck.
Outside of the woods and near the farm horizon, Shane confronts Rick. He tells Rick that he is too weak to take care of Lori and Carl. Shane reveals that his wife is weak and his son is broken. Rick messed everything up with coming back into their lives. We all know this confrontation is the last stand.
Shane pulls out his gun on Rick. Rick tries to talk Shane down. He agrees to hand over his gun. Rick tells Shane that you wouldn't shoot an unarmed man. Thus, Rick slowly approaches Shane with his gun. Rick's knife is resting in his back pocket. As soon as Rick gives Shane his gun, Rick whips out the knife and stabs Shane in the heart. It is a fatal wound that puts Shane down to the ground.

Rick walks away from Shane. We can see what the deceased Shane is seeing - zombie images. Carl appears with his gun. He aims the gun at his father. Rick tells Carl that it doesn't look like it appears.
Shane the zombie gets up. He is quickly approaching Rick. Carl shoots the gun, killing Shane the zombie with a fatal head wound. Rick is shocked, unaware that Shane came back to life as a walker.
